How to design an effective flyer

There is still a call for flyers and leaflets, but how do you get your message across best on print?

Flyers are a great way of getting new customers, but it does depend on how effective they are. Our graphic design team has over 30 years of experience, and we thought we would share a few of our tips.

Making flyers effective for your business

Printed flyers are an inexpensive way for local business to gain the attention of new customers.

They are perfect for launching a new business and offer brilliant opportunities to promote a new service or product locally. There is no doubt that they build brand awareness and increase sales.

However, flyers need to be well-designed to catch people’s attention. They need to have a call-to-action, encourage the recipient to read and, be eye-catching. You need to invest resources in content to produce a return in investment.

How much do flyers cost?

A full-colour flyer’s cost will depend on the design service, the printing and paper (stock) costs. Making sure the style of flyer reflects your business whether this is food, eco-friendly, a professional service, a local garage etc.

Key elements of the design are:

  • The headline
  • Graphics
  • Marketing strategy (i.e how will it be distributed)
  • A strong call to action

The design service is a vital element of each print item and will include the design layout, graphic artwork and photography.

All print is designed. A design will follow brand guidelines and reflect a company’s vision for its brand, new product or service. Getting this spot-on will take time and consideration. This is where our years of graphic design and print knowledge can make a difference.

Designing for Print Solutions

Designing for print is a very different skill set to other forms of design, and our expertise has to translate into the finished printed product. It takes years to understand various printing techniques, what works best in litho or digital, what methods are more economical for the client, and the best paper stock to use for particular markets and uses.

Our team at Kenads have been in print since leaving school. What we don’t know is not worth knowing, and that experience ensures our jobs are professionally printed and competitively priced.

Planning your design

Before you start your flyer think about how you are going to attract your audiences’ attention. You need a clear message – don’t overload them with information.

Write a message which is clear, quick to read and creative. Make it imaginative, memorable and engaging. They need to remember what your flyer is about in a few seconds.

Think about using both sides of the flyer – it doesn’t cost much more to print double-sided.

Use a catchy headline to hook them in to read your text and, don’t forget, to include your logo for brand awareness.

Make sure your content fits well with your target market and your buyer persona, and that it is written using language that is easy to understand by them.

Add contact information and directions

Make sure you include your contact information. Both for online and offline businesses, including physical directions to shop or website address is important making your flyer more useful to the reader.

Focus on the customer

Focus your content on the customer, not your company. The customer wants you to be interested in them – to solve their problems with your services and products. To do this, you need to understand your audience, who they are, where they are and what you will do for them. They need to identify with the message on your flyer.

Your audience will ask, “What’s in it for me? Use words such as ‘you’ and ‘your’ and some power words such as ‘free, save, love, new, results, and guarantee’.

Your call-to-action (CTA)

A CTA is what you would like your prospective customer to do – register for an event, make a purchase, phone you etc. Your flyer needs to be designed around that CTA.

Calls to actions such as ‘Call Us’ or ‘Order now’ are simple actions, but there are many others if you want to be more creative.

Choice of fonts and colour

As a general rule of thumb use just two font styles on your flyer. Using more will interrupt the flow of your text and distract from your message. Choose colours carefully ie primary colours for a children’s design; blue is good for professional services; yellow and grey are the new colours for 2021; black and white make bold and stylish statements; green is often used for healthy living designs.

Creating a balanced layout and a professional look

The layout is as important as your text and colour choices. Try not to overcrowd the information. Use the rule of two-thirds to give balance when using images and elements and remember to use space to your advantage.

Print uses high-quality images. Ensuring your finished flyer design looks professional, photographs in high resolution are a must. Don’t underestimate the power of using a smiling face to make people feel comfortable and create a friendly impression of your company.
Content should be placed into sections rather than one large block of text and using headings will make this easy to read.

Adding a discount is another way to encourage your audience to try your product or service.

Proofreading

Always proofread your content as seeing spelling or grammar mistakes can turn-off a potential customer.

Choosing the right paper

Flyers are meant to be handed out and benefit from a good-quality paper that is durable. Ask your printer for his recommendation.

Will there be a return to traditional company Christmas Cards this year?

We hope there will! However, we are suggesting that now is the right time to order – don’t leave it until the last minute. Will you be sending cards to your staff who are working remotely – this is a great idea to reinforce that team spirit and show them how you’re your care as a company. It’s a great way to write something special in a card, especially as office parties will be virtual or, non-existent this year. You can design your own card, make it personal and we can print these for you in plenty of time for Christmas.
